Your rights as a taxpayer
Every taxpayer has a set of primary rights that they should be aware of when dealing with the IRS. To help taxpayers who interact with the IRS understand their rights, the agency has outlined them inPublicación 1SP, Derechos del ContribuyentePDF.
Most US citizens and most people who work in the United States are taxed on income they earn that is more than a set minimum amount. Employees who receive a Form W-2
If you earn wages working for a business, your employer must give you a Form W-2, Wage, and Tax Statement, in English, showing your total earnings and withholding taxes. If you receive a Form W-2, then you will want to file a tax return since your employer paid taxes for you, and you may owe less tax than you paid.

If you’re an employee, your employer probably withholds income tax from your paycheck and pays it to the IRS on your behalf.
The amount of tax your employer withholds from your regular pay depends on:
- The amount you earn.
- The information you provide to your employer on Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate.

If you are self-employed, you generally need to make estimated tax payments.
In addition, you may need to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. This could happen if you are a sole proprietor, a partner in a business, or a worker in the sharing economy.
You may be charged a penalty if your estimated tax payments are late, even if a refund is due when you file your tax return.

What do you need to be able to present
Taxpayer identification number
You are required to include a taxpayer identification number on all your tax-related documents.
Most taxpayer-identification numbers are Social Security numbers.
