Lean Six Sigma Black Belt

A certified expert handles multiple projects simultaneously and leads a team of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt experts.

Green Belt – A green belt is someone who learns tips and techniques to help you run your Six Sigma or Lean project. They are usually cutting teeth on their first project and have had basic training in the project execution components: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control.

Black belt – A black belt is a green belt that has generally shown the real gist of Six Sigma, loves it, and has moved forward to deliver multiple projects with quantifiable results. They have also received additional training in in-depth analysis tools (statistical statistics) and will also provide guidance on change management or stakeholder impact.

The main differences are:

  • Green Belts run six sigma projects next to their day-to-day operations. They are part-time improvement experts.
  • Black Belts work (mostly) full-time on Six Sigma projects.
  • A typical Green Belt project provides financial benefits of $10K to $5K per year. Black belts are in the $100K- $250K range.
  • Green Belts understand and apply Six Sigma in their projects to solve business problems, while Black Belts can teach and coach Green Belts.

Six Sigma has a rank structure somewhat related to martial arts. So we can tell that there are different levels or different belts that we achieve in martial arts. Likewise, there are different levels when you start your Six Sigma training. The different belts in Six Sigma are Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belts.

The basic differences between Green Belt and Black Belt are:

Green Belt: –

These are individuals whose role is to integrate Six Sigma’s tools and methodologies to improve processes. They also need to understand the 6s methodology, communicate project status to the head or top management. Their role includes using other tools that are part of Six Sigma to improve processes. Keep the improved process after improvement.

One of their roles is to work on job-related Six Sigma projects.

Black Belt:-

These are individuals with an aptitude for statistics and individuals interested in dramatically improving and understanding processes. One of the roles of the black belt is to ensure that processes are expedited and that improvements in those processes are implemented at the same rate. They are also responsible for executing and communicating project results, communicating project status, guiding GB projects, and educating others on tools, lead process improvement teams.

A black belt may also lead a Six Sigma project team.

In addition to all these differences, one of the differences between Green Belt and Six Sigma lies in the measurement phase, the analysis phase, the control phase, and the learning materials taught to the individuals involved, starting at Lean.
